On the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to announce a new ‘Make in India’ campaign in which every household would get a wedding gift card in the name of the Prime Minister, the government has announced new gift cards to women, which they can use in lieu of traditional gifts.
A new Rs 200 gift card will be available for women in the next two months.
This new gift card is valid for one year and will be valid in the following denominations: Rs 500, Rs 1,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 10,000.
It will be issued by the National Gift Card Corporation (NGCC) through the end of April, said the government’s official Twitter handle, adding that the card would be used by all government departments.
A similar card, Rs 200 for a one-year subscription, was available for Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh.
The government is also setting aside Rs 1 crore for the marketing of this new card.
“The purpose of this card is to create a sense of community among women, and also to enable them to use it as a social tool,” a spokesperson said.
For women who cannot afford traditional gifts, such as jewellery, the gift card can be redeemed for a gift certificate.
According to the NDTV channel, the NDCC would issue a total of 12 gift cards, and the government hopes to issue about 25,000 cards by the end the year.
